On September 6, 2025, Dr. Carlos Alario Hoyos, Deputy Director of the UNESCO Chair “Scalable Digital Education for All” at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), presented the “Digital Micro-credentials” initiative at the University of Cuenca (Ecuador). The event brought together nearly 20 professors and members of the technical team, creating a valuable space for reflection on the transformative role of micro-credentials in higher education (educate.uc3m.es).
During the session, participants explored how micro-credentials can innovate training processes, facilitate the recognition of specific learning achievements, and promote more flexible education adapted to contemporary needs. The meeting strengthened dialogue on the relevance of these digital certifications within Latin American university contexts.
Dr. Alario’s participation in this forum represents a strategic contribution to the MOCHILA Project, enabling the exchange of experiences and knowledge related to the design, relevance, and dissemination of micro-credentials. This activity reinforces the presence of the UC3M UNESCO Chair in the region and supports the development of a robust regional framework for issuing micro-credentials in Latin America and the Caribbean.
MOCHILA is a project funded by the European Commission, aimed at developing a reference framework for the design and issuance of micro-credentials in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across Latin America and the Caribbean. The initiative seeks to promote flexible, modular certification systems aligned with lifelong learning.
